ASLI Mentor training
The previous ASLI Mentor Training Scheme was well regarded and offered a useful service to interpreters. Interpreting Pathways is working with ASLI to revive mentor training by making a bespoke course available for ASLI members. ASLI will invite those who complete this course to join the ASLI Mentoring Scheme.
The course takes approximately 7 months to complete and includes individual learning and reflection, group teaching sessions, and work with mentees to apply the learning. Course completion will include submission of evidence of the practical work undertaken with mentees, and reflection on the learning.
Eligibility Criteria:
The ASLI Mentor Training Programme is available to Full Members of ASLI who have been qualified as interpreters/translators for at least 5 years.
The ASLI Board have now agreed to also accept applications from members who are deaf or from an under-represented group with fewer than five years' post-qualification experience, and applications will be considered case by case. If you are a member without 5 years since qualifying, please see the ASLI statement and contact the ASLI Board in the first instance.
For the first cohort, priority will be given to those already offering some informal or formal mentoring to interpreting colleagues.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
Have opportunity to learn and analyse a range of theories about mentoring.
Receive guidance from trainers on techniques to use in mentoring situations and practise these skills with others.
Apply theory and practical skills and gain experience in working with mentees.
Compile reflective accounts of evidence of mentoring learning and practice.
Receive eligibility to be designated as an ASLI Trained Mentor on completion of the programme.
